Named after the strong north-westerly Mediterranean wind, Villa Mistral evokes the elegance of a sleek cruise ship rather than a cabin cruiser. Its metallic-tinged white finish contrasts slightly with Vento’s while still maintaining a powerful solidity with its companion. Both villas express structural elements internally and externally, suggesting the forward thrust of a vessel cutting through waves.
Mistral’s angular, outward-leaning structural elements and glazed walls create a strikingly dynamic experience, amplifying the sense of a ship surging through the sea. The street elevation combines timber and concrete with windows of varying scales, establishing a rhythmic façade that guides the eye towards glimpses of the water.
Like Vento, there is a carefully orchestrated sequence of arrival designed to heighten expectation and ensure maximum drama in terms of the view. Floating concrete slabs form a footbridge over a pond, linking the porte cochère to the entry vestibule, where a sculpted travertine wall screens the stairwell and orchestrates circulation to either side, delaying the dramatic final reveal.
Spread over four levels, Mistral includes a basement entertainment room, entry-level dining, kitchen, and living spaces, and second-level bedrooms. A roof terrace overlooks a nearby waterway, while the bedrooms, including the master suite, are positioned for ocean and street views.
As with Vento, Mistral integrates structure and form seamlessly, embodying MDL’s holistic design philosophy. From architecture to interior detailing, furnishings, and artworks, the villa represents a complete solution. “The only thing we haven’t done,” quips Massimo, “are the plates and dishes.” Feng shui principles further harmonise Mistral’s overall design, reflecting the interplay of wind and water.
Both villas challenge conventions, pushing structural and aesthetic boundaries. Their unique forms demand intricate craftsmanship, such as windows fully integrated into curved façades. Driven by Massimo’s passion for symbology, Mistral and Vento narrate their stories through harmonious exteriors, interiors, and landscaping, culminating in designs that are as cohesive as they are compelling.
